Microsoft has revealed the Windows 8 release date is October 26 2012.

Windows 8 is coming – bring a new user interface and more support for tablet computers.

It’s quite a change – and quite a risk for the guys from Redmond.  Recently Microsoft has been unable to compete with tablet computers – most notably the iPad from Apple.  To date Microsoft’s attempts at making Windows work on tablets have been flawed- Windows 7 has been the best yet, but doesn’t compare to anything from Apple or anything running Andriod.

Windows 8 support for tablets looks like it has improved – but how this will work on desktop PCs remains to be seen.
